Kevin Hosam: Founder & Chairman, EC Holdings
One of the responsibilities I take most seriously as Chairman of EC Holdings is ensuring that we continually expand our offering with investment migration programmes that genuinely add value to our clients. While legislation, market reports and government briefings are all important, I have always believed that there is no substitute for experiencing a country firsthand. Before EC Holdings introduces a new jurisdiction, I want to walk its streets, meet its people, understand its developments, and see its potential through the eyes of an investor.
That philosophy recently took me to Panama.
Like many in our industry, I knew Panama’s reputation as a regional financial centre and the home of one of the world’s most important shipping canals. What I didn’t fully appreciate until arriving was just how dynamic the country has become.
I spent several days in the Santa María district of Panama City, a master-planned community that immediately exceeded my expectations. The quality of the residential developments, immaculate landscaping, modern infrastructure and attention to detail were exceptional. A personal highlight was visiting GLP Properties with Horacio Mendoza, the company’s on-the-ground expert, who took the time to showcase several impressive projects. It became very clear that Panama’s developers are not simply constructing buildings—they are creating communities designed for long-term living and investment.
Panama City itself is remarkable. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in Central America, with a skyline that continues to evolve while maintaining its position as a regional hub for finance, logistics and international business. The country’s use of the US dollar, well-developed banking sector and strategic location have helped create an environment that continues to attract international investors.
From my understanding, the majority of applicants under Panama’s Qualified Investor Visa (QIV) programme currently originate from within the Americas. However, I believe that investors from Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe should begin paying much closer attention. Panama possesses many of the characteristics sophisticated investors seek: political stability, quality infrastructure, modern healthcare, excellent connectivity, a welcoming business environment and an investment programme that, in my opinion, has significant long-term potential.
What surprised me even more was discovering another side of Panama.

Leaving the skyscrapers behind, I travelled to the San Blas Islands, a part of the country that feels a world away from the modern city. Flying by private helicopter from the Pacific coast across the country’s lush interior toward the Caribbean was an unforgettable experience. Looking down over dense tropical forests, winding rivers and secluded waterfalls, it became obvious why Panama is regarded as one of the most biodiverse countries in the region.
The day itself was nothing short of spectacular. Aboard a catamaran, we explored pristine sand atolls surrounded by crystal-clear Caribbean waters. Local fishermen would quietly approach the boat offering freshly caught lobster and fish, which were prepared on the barbecue for lunch. It was simple, authentic and unforgettable—an experience that perfectly captured the natural beauty and warmth of the country.
For me, that contrast defines Panama. Few countries offer the ability to enjoy a world-class financial centre in the morning and spend the afternoon on untouched Caribbean islands surrounded by extraordinary natural beauty.
At EC Holdings, we are always searching for jurisdictions that can provide meaningful opportunities for our clients, not simply another residency programme. My visit to Panama has encouraged me to study the country much more closely, continue engaging with local stakeholders and further evaluate its Qualified Investor Visa programme.
I can certainly understand why so many North Americans are choosing to make the move south. What was once perhaps one of the region’s best-kept secrets is rapidly becoming one of its most compelling investment destinations.
For me, the secret is out.
Panama is simply lovely.
